Frequently Asked Questions

    Technical Questions

  • Where does these static or strange noises heard occasionally in the audiometer's speakers or headphones comes from?
    • Listen to a sample:
This sound is from a cell phone in operation near the audiometer. Some audiometer's model are more sensitive to this kind of interference. Smart phones communicate regularly with cellular relays to exchange data and it is at this moment that interference can occur. Talking to the cellular may also cause interference. The solution is to turn off the cell phone. Placing the phone in airplane mode should also eliminate the problem.
  • I have an air-bone gap at some frequencies, typically at 500, 2000 and 4000Hz. What's the problem?
  • Hardware & Software Questions

  • The computer I am thinking of purchasing has a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit operating system, is this o.k.?
    • If you are thinking about purchasing a new computer, please pay close attention to the version of Windows that will come with the computer. Many new computers are delivered with Windows 7 - 64 bit installed. Although more and more softwares are developed to operate on 64 bit operating system, many existing applications do not work on 64 bit system. Remember that it is possible to run a 32 bit operating system using a 64 bit processor; in this case the processor will run like 32 bit version.

  • How do I clean and/or desinfect my eartips and my earphone cushions?
    • Ear tips and cushions may be cleaned by washing in a solution of warm water and a mild detergent. To desinfect, it may be soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or in a 10% sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solution. It is also important to respect the standards (Health Canada). The latter always have priority.
  • Can I disinfect and reuse REM tubes?
    • No. Many soft materials - including the one used for the tubes - stiffen when disinfected and the surface structure changes making it less flexible in use. Also, traces of ototoxic disinfectants (like chlorhexidine) on the tubes could potentially harm the patient’s hearing.
  • Can I use the REM tubes on several patients before discarding them?
    • No. The tubes should always be replaced when testing a new patient to protect against cross contamination and to obtain best possible results. Tubes can become contaminated by the ear or the hands, and can present a health hazard to the next patient, particularly those with diminished immune systems. Tubes should always be disposed of after a single use.
